What is a World Heritage Site?

Part A

It needs to be a creative human masterpiece and it also needs to be a unique and special area. The site should also display examples of ecological and biological features. It has to have an important relevance to society and be of irreplaceable historical importance.

The UNESCO prevents special, important and beautiful sites from being damaged and destroyed by developers and other people. Without the UNESCO many historical sites would be turned into housing or other buildings. World heritage sites are often positioned on prime real estate and people often wish to develop this land.

A treaty is an document which states an agreement or decisions concerning a particular area, building, statue or people of significance. A treaty relevant to our site, The Great Wall of China, is that the site cannot be developed, or deliberately damaged or destroyed. This means that the Great Wall of China cannot be built on or knocked down.

Shark Bay- Western Australia
Shark Bay is a heritage site because it is unique, special and irreplaceable. It is a natural wonder that educates people about different breeds of sharks that are native to that area. Rare and unique sharks thrive in the water at Shark Bay and live healthily and undisturbed. It is also historically important because it shows that the inhabitants before us took care of the land and were careful not to damage it.
The Australian government's Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts is responsible for taking care of Shark Bay. They have to make sure that there are no threats in the waters and that the waters of Shark Bay are kept clean and healthy.

Great Wall of China- China
The Great Wall of China is a world heritage site because it is of historical importance and it is a vital part of China’s culture. It is an irreplacable site that tells people today about China’s history and about the type of people they are. They would have to be hard working, creative and clever to build a place that is still relevant to today's society.
The Chinese government would conserve and maintain The Great Wall of China, they also maintain tourism to get funds so that they are able to conduct maintenance check ups.

Le Strade Nuove- Italy
The Le Strade Nuove is a part of the Palazzi dei Rolli in Genoa’s historic centre and it shows the first example in Europe of an urban development project. The site includes a collection of Renaissance and Baroque palaces that are irreplaceable and of significant historical importance.  They also offer an original example of a public network of private residences designated to host state visits.
The Genoa City Council maintains the whole Palazzi dei Rolli system including the Le Strade Nuove. They run regular maintenance check up and employ a number of paid staff and volunteers to conduct tours and organise events.

Letter to the Government

Letter to the Government
Shark Bay

Dear the Department of Environment and Conservation for Western Australia,

We strongly believe that Shark Bay is a very important breeding ground for many unique and rare types of sharks and that many efforts should be made to keep it in wonderful condition and to protect it from pollution and damage. Many other species of marine animals also call Shark Bay home and thrive in its environment. If the care and upkeep of Shark Bay was discontinued many breeds of marine animals may become very rare or even extinct. Many holiday makers and builders wish to develop the Shark Bay area because of its beautiful landscape and views, it has a wonderful climate as well and attracts many tourists.
The Shark Bay holiday program also educates the public about the different and rare breeds of marine animals that live in the area. It educates people about how they can care and protect the marine animals and about how they can make a difference to the environment by doing simple things, like recycling and not littering.
In conclusion if the Shark Bay area was no longer funded and conserved many breeds of marine animals, including rare sharks and dolphins, would either become extinct or very rare. The constant maintenance of the Shark Bay area is a vital part of the survival of many breeds of marine animals.

Yours sincerely,
Jessica Casper, Hannah Whyte and Johanna Walsh.
