What is a World Heritage Site?

Part A

It needs to be a creative human masterpiece and it also needs to be a unique and special area. The site should also display examples of ecological and biological features. It has to have an important relevance to society and be of irreplaceable historical importance.

The UNESCO prevents special, important and beautiful sites from being damaged and destroyed by developers and other people. Without the UNESCO many historical sites would be turned into housing or other buildings. World heritage sites are often positioned on prime real estate and people often wish to develop this land.

A treaty is an document which states an agreement or decisions concerning a particular area, building, statue or people of significance. A treaty relevant to our site, The Great Wall of China, is that the site cannot be developed, or deliberately damaged or destroyed. This means that the Great Wall of China cannot be built on or knocked down.
